CATEGORY II TEACHERS
Melanie Hawkins is in her senior year studying Piano Performance under the direction of Rajung Yang. She has competed in numerous competitions including Moscow Music Teacher’s Piano Competition and Idaho Music Teacher’s Association Competition in which she was selected as a winner and received honorable mention.
She is repeatedly selected to perform in master classes and has worked with artists such as Stephen Hough and Anton Nel. Melanie performs frequently as she is often the piano student selected to perform at University of Idaho Music Convocations.
Melanie has an obvious passion and excitement for music and teaching. She has been teaching for the past seven years and is a member of Music Teacher’s National Association.
Morgan Kline is a senior piano performance major at the University of Idaho where she studies with Dr. Rajung Yang. She has given performances at the Idaho Music Teachers Association conference, the Palouse Chamber Music Workshop, and the Student Chamber Music recital in addition to completing her junior recital at the Lionel Hampton School of Music.
As a piano teacher, Morgan hopes to enhance each student’s excitement for music, and give each one the opportunity to develop as a well-rounded musician. She joins the Preparatory Department with eight years of teaching experience both in her Alaskan hometown and in Moscow.
Morgan also holds various research interests and was recently selected to give a workshop at the 2017 Piano Pedagogy Symposium at the University of North Florida. She currently serves as secretary for the university’s MTNA Collegiate Chapter.
CATEGORY III TEACHERS
Melody Morrison is a graduate student at University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton School of Music where she is studying to attain a Master’s in Music with a concentration in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. Melody studies piano under Dr. Rajung Yang and holds a Graduate Teaching Assistantship at the University of Idaho, where she teaches Class Piano to Music Majors and Minors, and accompanies the Men’s Chorus. She is actively involved in the U of I’s Music Teacher’s National Association Collegiate Chapter and is serving as treasurer during the 2016-17 academic year.
Ms. Morrison has been playing piano since the age of five and has been teaching private lessons since 2011. She has studied under Jennifer Garett, Brad Johnson, Judith Weathers, and Peggy Dougherty. Melody holds a Bachelor of Science in Piano Performance from Corban University in Salem, OR. During the course of her undergraduate study at Corban, she served as pianist and percussionist in Jazz Band, assistant principal second violinist in Chamber Orchestra, and accompanist for Chamber Choir. She also appeared as a guest soloist with the Corban University Concert Band last spring and was a recipient of the 2016 Music Performance Award.
Megan Rich is a first-year graduate student in the Piano Performance and Pedagogy program. She is studying under Dr. Roger McVey, and holds a teaching assistantship for Piano Class and individual piano lessons.
She has experience teaching at the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint, and extensive experience as an accompanist for university soloists and worship groups. She is currently serving as the Vice President of the MTNA Collegiate Chapter at the University of Idaho, and has presented at national pedagogy conferences for the past two years.
In addition to piano pedagogy, she also has an academic emphasis in the Kodály Method, which is especially effective for young students.
Paul Zeller is currently a student at the University of Idaho, where he is pursuing a master of music degree in piano performance under the tutelage of Dr. Roger McVey. He holds a bachelor of music in piano performance from Concordia College in Moorhead MN, where he studied under Dr. Jay Hershberger.
While studying in Idaho, Paul has competed in several competitions and participated in local piano organizations. During the 2015-16 school year, Paul won the University of Idaho concerto competition, through which he was able to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the University of Idaho Orchestra. Paul was selected to perform in the honors recitals for the North Idaho Piano festival in the fall, as well as for adjudications in the spring. Finally, he participated in the MTNA Idaho division piano competition, in which he received an honorable mention.
Paul is also active as a teacher in his school and community. He ran his first studio while working towards his undergraduate degree, teaching students from his neighborhood. While at the University of Idaho for his master’s degree, Paul manages his own private studio in addition to teaching introductory piano classes at the university.
CATEGORY VII TEACHERS
Jovanni-Rey de Pedro serves as Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy, and Director of Piano for the Preparatory Division at the University of Idaho. He holds performance degrees from the Vienna Conservatory of Music, Trinity College of Music London, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy and performance from the University of Michigan. American pianist Roger McVey is an Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Idaho, and has previously taught at the University of Kansas, Mercer University, and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He holds degrees in piano performance from the University of Kansas, Indiana University, and East Carolina University.
